If you are going as far as New York, the Finger Lakes area in central New York State is just beautiful! Wonderful autumn colors, the long lovely lakes surrounded by dozens of wineries, (mmmm.... wine tasting tours!), lots of history, the absolutely breath-taking gorges to walk up, and lots more.
