Generally, the Sue's are appliqued to a plain background of muslin or tone one tone fabric. You can get creative, if you decide to add sashing between the blocks, by using a different fabric to go around each block, generally 30's reproduction fabric. I have seen them with a variety of sashing fabrics, but depending on the age of the blocks, this might be something to consider.
