I heard that birds like scrap material and batting to make nests so I put some cut and shredded pieces of cotton batting and white strips in a suet basket and hung on the deck. Yesterday there were Goldfinch's all over the basket plucking out the batting and flying away to line their nests with it.

It's been very cold and rainy here in Maine and the birds appreciate the extra warmth in their nests for their babies and I appreciate having less fabric and scraps to dispose of. Just make sure to cut the pieces into small strips that they can then pull apart.
