The first one's "block" is made of six 9 patches, one on each edge of a large hexagon. There's an equilateral triangle between the 9 patches. That's all!

I agree, but it may be easier to construct if you use 6 equilateral trianges instead of the hexagon. Would be the same size equilateral triangle as the single one.
Agreed ... the more I looked at it the more I thought it could be constructed like a "double" OBW.
