This is what I was going to suggest as well. Not sure why anyone would hate them except maybe the price??? After they are washed they are no less soft/pliable than any other quilting fabrics - IMO.
Kona cotton is pretty inexpensive. I have seen it for 4.99-6.99/yard and that isn't even on sale. I really hate to use cheap thin white fabrics for the very reason that the seams show. I think sometimes quilters have a hard time paying a little more for better quality plain white fabric because it is just that: plain white fabric.
