Lots of pieces in a block can support a larger block.
Too few and it doesn't look good.
For instance: a 4-patch would look best as a 4" finished, could go to 6" finished - wouldn't look good any larger
I rarely make a block larger that 9" finished.
My Burgoyne Surrounded (which has more pieces than I care to remember) is a 17" block.
