I probably have some around here somewhere. Since I have a bad habit of trying every new thing. The best way to perfect your handquilting is to do it on wholecloth. What gets in the way of small stitches are seams, appliques and to tight a thread count. After 40 years of handquilting I am fast, neat and consistent. Some stitches are bigger than others because the above mentioned roadblocks made small stitches impossible. I have to resort to "stab" stitching when encountering a thick seam or applique with several layers. Even sewing machines have problems with such areas.
Relax and enjoy the process.
