It's not that much work, really.

You probably want to use a fusible such as Steam-a-Seam Light. Fuse it to the fabric, trace the shapes on the back of the fusible, cut out (a good task to do while watching tv), fuse to background, and stitch around.

I think if you split up the job into smaller parts, you will not find it so daunting. You *do* need a sharp pair of scissors, though!
