Find your patterns, on line or from a book. Do some sketches of the quilt the way you would like it to look. Figure out which applique technique you want to use (There are several) and then experiment with a block or two to be sure you can get the effect you want. You might want to do a pillow to begin with, just to get started and see what problems you might encounter.
