My suggestion is to hound the thrift stores, if any of them carry fabric or buy cotton shirts and go scrappy. I have found lots of yardage for next to nothing, and fleece throws that I use for the backing, and a few times, even batting. Or use flannel for batting and a sheet for backing. Getting all of this at a thrift store would keep your cost below $25. Good luck. Be sure to post what you decide on.
