Maybe in the medallion you could quilt only the cream/light pieces to let the darker pieces advance. Either a simple 1/4 around or, a series of parallel lines (in the light/cream) or echoing.
One-eighth inch sounds very pretty but wouldn't that have you stitching through double quarter inch seams, in places? Ouch.
