My problem is now making sure it is 12 1/2 after it is finished. My seams are really good so I think some of the pattern pieces aren't exactlly the right size so do the test and measure the one inch square. That is what helped me the most.

about your question about the 12 1/2" block. one thing you will find with most blocks, to get that in order to get that size, you will need to make it a "scant" quarter inch. Not an eighth inch, but a scant quarter inch.
This is especially true with a block with a lot of pieces, seems to need more like that.
The Quilter's cache has lot's of 12 1/2" blocks free to pick from. They have all sizes, just go to the 12" 'finished' size.
