I buy a LOT of batik, but I choose by pattern and touch. I prefer small, repeat patterns in very narrow color changes. I like them to read as almost a solid from across the room, but with just a hint of 'je ne sais quoi' that draws you closer and closer. ;)
I look for small geometric or botanical patterns, seldom buy watercolors or mottles and walk right past big-busy-multi-colored stuff. The fabric must feel solid on the bolt, not flimsy at all. Brand does not matter, but I find that 90% of what I buy is either Kaufman's, usually their Artisan Batiks, or Timeless Treasures Tonga.
