Crayola markers worked for me as well with no problems.
Years ago I took my first quilting class at our local college. The inst. had us use the grey pencils. I've never had a problem with them. They mark well on all colors and are usually gone by the time you've finished quilting. The marks easily erase with a gum eraser. You can also sharpen them to a very fine point like a regular pencil.
