it depends on the need of the quilt. if it is going to a baby i try to keep it around 40" (it was the perfect size when my dd and ds were babies to swaddle them in their quilt till they were around 2 years old) other than that I make it so that it looks right. I have only make one bed size though. working on the second right now.
