I used to live in So. Texas where there are huge cotton farms. Having seen all the chemicals that cotton plants are sprayed with, I ALWAYS wash my fabric first to get them out. Cotton plants are defoliated chemically and then harvested with huge machines that cut the whole plant, chop it up to separate the boll from the plant, ginned and baled. It's a long way from hand picking cotton, but it relies on many dangerous chemicals. If I knew of a source of organic cotton cloth, I'd use it.
those chemicals are LONG gone after processing..BUT new chemicals are added when the fabric is shipped back to the US to kill bugs and avoid getting mold!
