a double bed top is 54 x 75. if the pattern part of the top is 72 . that will give you 9" of over hang of the pattern on each side.

a queen is 60 x 80. if the pattern part is 72 then you get 4" overhang on each side. you may want to add borders to the quilt top. ouch!

doesn't it seem never to end? but, you're right: you're not doing this for nothing! she won't appreciate it until she's at least partly grown, but when she does, she'll want more and more and more. look out! no good deed goes unpunished, right? teach you to be a great mom!
Thanks, butterflywing. I figured I would have to make it wider, but hadn't yet checked sizes for the different mattresses. I figure I will do to the pattern first, and toss the top on her bed to see what to add where. She sleeps like the Princess and the Pea (high bed frame with two mattresses, as we have no where to store the extra one), so a good long drop won't be hanging on the floor.

Yeah, that no good deed goes unpunished thing...this is for the 11 year old. Now our 14 year old daughter is chomping at the bit for hers.

omak, thank you for your comments. I did buy a book called Color Confidence (forget the author), and I try to use the principles I read in it. I've been looking at it so much, I have lost how I first felt about the fabric selection. I often rely on my daughters because, despite their young age, they both have exceptionally good eyes for colour. Must get it from their father, 'cause I painted the front door Big Bird Yellow. Didn't work well.
