I do this all the time. Some people call it cheater binding. I do this on my charity quilts. I square up the front, trim it all around, then cut my backing to 1" if I want a 1/2" binding. I press the backing to fold up to the batting/front sandwich, then press this folded edge to the front, miter the corners and stitch it down. Very simple. That is all there is to it. If you want a different size binding just double that measurement when cutting the backing fabric.
