I machine-bind...or at least I plan to. I don't pre-wash.
I have never as yet made a binding for a quilt. I always add strips on all four sides of the top layer. Cut the batting and back side the same as top layer. Sew all three pieces together leaving a Gap on one side and turn the whole shebang. Being sure all three are layered proper sequence. Quillow instructions explain how to layer. Works well for me. Not brave enough yet to try binding.....
