I'm so sorry this happened to you. The fabric was probably old or possibly sun damaged. I once had black fabric (that had been washed) become religious (holey) on the very first quilt I sold. I'm not sure what happened,but somehow I must have mixed in some older black fabric,but I was ableto make it right. So sorry. I don't think I've heard anything like this before.
