I think it's a matter of preference...and skill. It's a learning process, just like most anything new to a person. Your instructor may have attached one incorrectly, or had trouble using it & just gave up.

That said...I've used them...wasn't thrilled with those made for domestic machines.

I don't use one any more. Gave mine away... I bought it thinking that since my industial worked so great for upholstery, the generic one would be great on my Singer machine... It was ok for quilting straight lines..but for general sewing...a bust for me.
