A true confession here- sometimes I have to threaten my machines into behaving. If I feel extremely miffed, then I threaten them with a crow bar, otherwise, I am going to sell them to someone that does't love and care for them like I do. Then after a sip of something soothing, they improve their behavior.
(Since I don't have a crow bar - or if we do, I have no idea where it is- they don't know it would never happen.)
I have found that talking to my machines seems to help, and like you said, threatening makes them behave sometimes.
