The old wax should come right out if you run hot water over it to soften it. I would put the votive candles in a small votive holder for sure to protect the pretty glass candle holder. You wouldn't want the heat from the candle to break the pretty outer candle holder. The candle wicks also will need to be trimmed to keep them short while burning otherwise you'll get a black film all over the inside of the holder.
