Funny...I did not follow the tutorial's binding instructions; in fact, I never read that far! I do know that Beth [the tutorial instructor] likes to do all binding by machine. I do mine half using the machine and the other half by hand.

For my projects, I machine sewed the binding to the front, then turned and hand stitched it down on the back. As I sew, I stop the machine when it came to an angle, 1/4 inch away from the edge. Leaving the needle down, I raise the presser foot and pivot the quilt and the binding so that the quarter inch edge of my foot is once again lined up with the edge of the quilt and binding. Keep going this way all around.

When I turn the binding to the back and come to the angle edge, I just made a little tuck and stitched it down. Here are two pictures to show how it looks.
