Actually, they really are about the same or a little bit lower. Figure it out. In 1956 hamburger meat was about 43 cents a pound and minimum wage was 65 cents an hour or a penny a minute. Now minimum wage is $6.50 an hour or about 10 cents a minute. To be the same price (or take the same amount of minutes to earn money to buy a pound), hamburger meat would be $4.30 a pound. In the 50's a 3 bedroom brick tract house cost about $22K. That would have been 11 years salary (2000 hrs a year at $1/hour). Today buying a house about the same size (most places) would be $143K (6.5 times $22K).
