After watching many shows on training dogs and reading lots of books, I think this is an outdated philosophy. They are responding more to the tone of your voice than putting their noses in it. Also, remember that dogs will eat their own output, so maybe not so bad to them. We had great success with crate training and my grandpuppies are crate trained with success. It seems cruel to some folks, but, it gives the dogs a level of security.
