I started quilting about 18 months ago. My local quilt shop has 1 day a month where the owner designs a quilt and shows how to cut, sew and put it together. She also hands out the patterns which can usually be made from 8 fat quarters. They bundle fat quarters in 8s. So that's what I did for almost a year, my husband kept peering at me every time I bought more fabric. I started buying yardage about 9 months or so ago. I was tired of never being able to make something from my stash because I had no stash.
I started out buying a couple yards here and there when it was on sale. Mostly in neutral colors or as blenders. I would add a half yard or so to the amounts I was buying for pieces I was working on. I've finally gotten to the point where I can start working from my stash. Not entirely, but every bit helps.
My husband still peers at me when I buy more fabric, but I don't think that's ever gonna change. Doesn't bother me too much either ;)
