When you sew with 5 it does make it bigger but with the odd number one of the fabrics makes a complete circle. I made the binding from that same fabric and liked the way it turned out.
If you use three fabrics, making the outside two fabrics the same width, and the center one wider, you get continuous rings of the same fabric. A less scrappy look. I must have made 200 of these back in the early 90's for placemats and sent them to everyone I knew. they are probably in thrift stores now, as they are certainly dated at this point. Can't blame my friends if they gave them away. LOL
