If the photos show up like I hope they do, here's a photo of the applique and the rings sewn. I didn't have a pattern but just kept recutting paper patterns that I drew until I was happy with them. Everything is just regular applique with Heat n Bond to help hold the pieces in place. I zigzagged around the logs and the grate. I'm just a beginner in free motion but did it on the logs (squiggly lines about half an inch apart along the grain of the bark fabric. I also did free motion on the flames and I'm hoping the second photo here shows how I extended my stitches out into the black area to make the flames look a bit more real. The bark fabric I bought from QuiltHome.com. I typed in "bark" in their search box and there it was. Excellent, quick service from them.
