I did my String X quilt without foundation piecing, but I made the width wider than I wanted and then trimmed them up to be straight. I wasn't overly concerned that the horizontal seams were exact, but they stayed pretty even anyway.
Not all my strips started the same length although most were semi-consistent in width.
