I would alter the second one slightly to being able to tell when the geometry is clearly "off", but not necessarily knowing why...just that it's wrong. There are unlimited tools these days that can help with the math and geometry of quilting if it's just not your forté. As for patience and a precise nature, I agree completely. All three can be learned...even self-taught...quite easily.
