I've always used a hoop. Just a plain hoop - no base on it. I have used it for years. I think it cost less than 20.00, but that was years ago. I have also quilted with a large wood frame. I like the hoop because it is portable and doesn't take up so much space. I bought a vintage wood frame a year ago, but haven't used it yet.
