You could do a depression block. I did it using 2 prints, but it was made up back in the 1930's for scrap quilts. I think you have the perfect squares for it. You could coordinate fabrics for each block, but not coordiante each block with each other. Hope that made sense- I think it'd be called a controlled scrappy, like you said.
