I machine stitch the binding to the back, but then it is very difficult for me to pin once I've turned the binding to the front. The sewing isn't the problem--it's getting those darned pins through all the layers.
I never use pins anymore to do binding, I use the small snap-clip for hair I get at the dollar store, got tired of getting stuc by the pins, works great and lots cheaper than the ones you get at Joann's or other fabric stores.
