I have an 8 1/2" x 24" ruler that I use to wind fabric around. Slide it out of the wound fabric and put on shelf. I can then look at the piece, count the folds and quickly calculate how much I have. I do fold the fabric lengthwise before winding around the ruler. I count each fold as approx 1/4 yard
