Thanks for the suggestions. I can't wait to get the plastic and markers out to try some of the designs. I can't remember where I came across the idea of using a clear shower curtain liner and vis-a-vis markers and lay it on top of the quilt to trial designs, but it's one of the best tips I've come across! I don't know why it is that when I was hand quilting, I never seemed to be stumped on how to quilt a top. Now that I'm machine quilting, I look at my tops and go "ok, now what do I do?". I think it has something to do with the starts and stops when machine quilting, and feeling like I need to do a continuous line of quilting as much as possible. I think it's a mental block more than anything else.
