I think the flat side of the needle goes to the left, towards the fold up bed. The needle is then threaded from right to left.
An easy way to remember which way the needle goes in is: NFL= needle flat left. It threads from inside to outside. The bobbin goes into the bobbin case with the thread coming over the top of the bobbin towards you.
