you didn't really tell us just why it 'looks terrible'? what went wrong?
normally i have just made regular binding- fold in half, pressed, machine stitched to one side- folded to other side- stitched down == just like nycquilter does=
without knowing what exactly went wrong on yours we really are not much help i'm afraid.
