I've been making these with a layer of batting between the two bottom layers. It adds some absorbency. I also use 5 inch squares- using my accuquilt cutter or charm packs. I recently purchased the 8 inch square accuquilt die to make matching potholders. Haven't made the potholders yet but the coasters are looking great. I have attached the link to the you tube video.
