I have had no experience with the non slip paint. If it works as well as you say it does go for it. As for batting I would layer 2 or 3 pieces to help you get the cushy feel. A thick poly you buy by the yard at Joann's or Hancock's would work as well, but wouldn't have the absorbancy the cotton battings would.
