With both SID and FMQ, I pull the bobbin thread up before starting. I do not backstitch when SID; but do take 3 stitches in place when starting and ending FMQ. I take the threads to the back with a "cheater" needle, tie them in a square knot and bury the threads in the batting. Maybe I don't need to do all that; but it works for me.
