Yes, red would be a great idea. This is a very handsome quilt. When I started quilting I had problems with puckers which were resolved by additional pressing, both as I went along and before quilting. That might help you too. My teacher said to check alignments after every seam, at least to start, then fix anything that needs it. I don't know if that would help also.
