Back in my hippie days, I made a patchwork bedskirt (called 'em dust ruffles, but the same thing). It wasn't a quilt, though, no batting and backing, and was never intended to be a quilt. Making it was very simple, same as any other bedskirt/dust ruffle.

It lasted longer than my liking for it (too busy at floor level) and I decided I much preferred the look of a quilt on top of the bed with a solid color skirting below.
