My background is a Maywood white on white. I bougth a bolt (my lQS gave me a discount and added it to her order). What I do not use on the front will be my backing. I am picky and knowing this was a long term project I did not want to run short then find the background was out of print.
I did the same thing for my Civil War DJ. I got 18 yards of muslin-looking fabric at WhittlesFabrics.com for $4.50/yd. and it looks like I'll have plenty for the backing. They cut the fabric in three-yard lengths for me so it'd be easier to wash and cut pieces from as I need it.
