I had a lot of comments about my scrap organization. Well originally I just threw all the smaller scraps into a plastic bin, and when that got full they went into a plastic bag hanging from the door of the sewing room. They were all jumbled and useless. Then (before I decided what to make with them) I spent a couple of hours (while watching TV) sorting them into about 6 color groups, but that was not helpful in the long run, since I only needed lights and darks separated for the log cabin. We went down to San Diego to visit our kids in June, and I took the whole mess with me, as well as a small cutting board, rotary cutter, and two rulers. While I was there (about a week) I cut all the scraps into log cabin sizes and separated lights from dark.
I got the habit of using the silverware trays for storage from Judy Martin's recent log cabin book. I marked each tray with the size of its strip with a small piece of paper taped to the tray. I've used this system previously for log cabins, and it works great. The patches that don't get used in one log cabin stay organized until you make the next one, since the trays can be stacked and stored.
It won't be long before my scraps are disorganized again, but this time I know that all is not lost, and I can actually make something from them.
