I'm doing the McCall's pp pattern like sewmary, and it really isn't that difficult. Time consuming but not the end of the world.
Pick a pattern that fits your worldview! There are some super-simple patterns that just applique the rings, and there are fiddly little piece patterns that can take years to finish. The former would fit someone who wants the look of the quilt and the quilt itself. The latter is better for someone who loves the process and at the end, it's a lovely quilt but s/he's mostly itching for the next puzzle. I'm somewhere in between.
