Default Should I use High Loft Batting

I have now pieced a full size top and a crib size top. I decided to practice on the small top and am trying to use a high loft batting that I was given (I purchased white and natural for the full size). I want to hand quilt the full size, but thought with the small one I could use my regular machine with a quilting foot. My stitches are minute. I tried and tried adjusting the tension, stitch size, and everything else you can imagine, and nothing worked. I decided to go ahead and hand stitch and am still having a hard time. I have never quilted, but have done lots of needlework. Could it be the thickness of the batting giving me such a hard time? Any suggestions?

Sorry so long.
