I always check the package for recommendations for quilting. My main battings are Warm and Natural (or warm and white) and poly down for my machine quilting. I used a wool batt that was lovely to machine quilt thru (buttah!) and I think it is recommended for hand quilting too. (washing instructions are different for the wool tho..so for me its a toss up). High loft batting I have in my stash suggest tying only.
