I use either one strand of hand quilting thread or 2 strands of regular sewing thread. Just depends on color and what I have on hand and what is handiest!
I do the same IF I happen to hand bind. I normally like to bind using my machine. I've found that it stands up to repeated washing better. But you wouldn't have that problem if the quilt is not going to be washed alot. Good luck.
