I've made SIMILAR slippers and the upper part is always a bit larger than the sole so you have some gathers at the toe. The gathers don't show but guess the pattern maker thought my pattern needed the extra room at the toe???? You might try doing a gathering stitch on the larger pieces as previously suggested.
